Jazz Up Your Summer Iced Tea

Whether it's at a barbecue with friends or just hanging around the house, you can seek refuge from the heat this summer with a cool, refreshing iced tea. While the base of iced tea is usually a classic black tea, you can jazz it up by adding some additional flavors to liven up the same-ole, same-ole. Follow these three easy tips.

Add Mint

If you want to add something a little extra to your tea, add mint. Mint can enhance the existing flavor of the tea leaves while pulling in a satisfying finish for your taste buds. The green leaves look attractive in a glass, and the mint is also naturally cooling to the body for those hot summer days. An added bonus of adding mint to your iced tea is that mint is proven to help with digestion, headaches, acne, and stress.

Add Citrus

If you are bored with black tea, lemons, oranges, and limes can add zest to your brew with minimal effort. You may usually add lemon to your tea, but adding oranges or even limes bring an unexpected flavor that will delight your senses. Use store-bought citrus juice or squeeze a fresh lemon/lime/orange into the tea and leave the rinds in the pitcher. You can also add a sprig of mint or a citrus slice to the rim of your glass for a memorable non-alcoholic drink at this year’s barbecue.

Add Syrup

One of the more challenging parts to getting your iced tea just right is stirring in the sugar and waiting for it to dissolve fully. Using syrup solves this problem and makes your tea sweet in seconds flat. If you don't want to buy sugar syrup you can make your own. Use 1/2 cup of mint or two lemons. (You can also substitute two limes or one orange for the lemons.) Combine the lemon or mint with one cup of sugar and 1 1/2 cups of water. Boil these until the sugar is dissolved. Let it cool and strain through a fine sieve. Use about three and a half teaspoons of syrup for a single glass of tea.

With these three additions to your iced tea repertoire, you will open yourself to a whole new world of iced tea options. Not only will you enjoy new flavors, but you’ll also save money. That same fancy flavored iced tea will run you $4 - $5 a glass at a café, but you can enjoy a pitcher or two for the same price.
